Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS)

The Kollsman EVS II All Weather Window® EFVS has been developed to improve the capability for commercial, business and military aircraft to execute precision and non-precision approaches and safely land in fog, rain, snow, and other reduced visibility conditions thereby reducing CFIT accidents. EVS II provides lower landing credit in accordance with current FAA and EASA EFVS regulations. The Kollsman EVS II is ideal for modern WAAS/SBAS RNP operations by providing a means to continue descent below decision height at all airports regardless of infrastructure and weather conditions. The Kollsman All Weather Window® EFVS also provides improved situational awareness during ground operations aiding in runway incursion accident reduction.

The All Weather Window®'s operational benefits are numerous. A primary benefit is to allow the pilot to identify the required visual cues (approach) lights, runway threshold, etc.) at the published Decision Height or MDA so that the approach can be continued down to the 100 ft Visual Transition point. The EFVS IR sensor allows the pilot to "see" these required cues when reduced visibility conditions would prevent visual detection with the naked eye. The end result is that any aircraft equipped with the Kollsman All Weather Window® EVS and HUD will be able to execute an approach at all precision and non-precision airports down to 100 ft HAT.

A secondary benefit is that the All Weather Window® also improves overall safety and situational awareness making it an effective tool to aid in the reduction of CFIT and runway incursion accidents. Other airplanes in the air and on active taxiways and runways will clearly stand out in the EFVS image, thus reducing the potential for accidental collisions.

System Components

The EVS II All Weather Window® consists of a 1 - 5 micron Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) sensor specifically designed for this application; an Electronics Procession box; and an IR window installed in the aircraft radome. The Kollsman All Weather Window® uses proprietary video processing software algorithms to display an IR image of the airport environment, (buildings, ground vehicles, lighted and unlighted aircraft, and terrain, etc.) to the pilot on any raster capable Head-Up Display (HUD) or a head-down display (HDD), such as a CRT or LCD.

Status

The Kollsman EVS II All Weather Window® EFVS is now available for installations on all business, commercial, and military aircraft.
