Kollsman Supports Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer on Record Breaking Flight
MERRIMACK, NH Kollsman, Inc. supplied vital equipment on the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer that enabled pilot Steve Fossett to break aviation records during his historical non-stop global flight. Scaled Composites, the aircraft maker, selected the KAPS outflow valves for the Global Flyer for their reliability and performance.
According to Jon Karkow, GlobalFlyer Project Engineer "the unique design of the Kollsman outflow valves increases safety by completely sealing in the event of engine failure or interruption of cabin inflow air. This is especially important on the GlobalFlyer since its pressurization air is provided solely from its single turbofan engine. Kollsman engineers worked closely with Scaled Composites to properly integrate the outflow valves with the super simple and lightweight environmental control system used by GlobalFlyer. The result is a solution worthy of a world record."
