Kollsman EVS Benefits Recognized by the FAA
MERRIMACK, NH - In a recently released rule change announced by the FAA on January 9th 2004, Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) equipment such as the Kollsman's All Weather Window® EVS, will now be allowed for use by pilots during approaches in place of natural vision. This revised rule states that EFVS can be used to fly a standard instrument approach procedure, below the minimum descent altitude (MDA) or decision height (DH) to 100 feet above the touchdown zone elevation, even when the airport environment is not visible using natural vision.
This new rule promotes a technology that enhances safety and reduces costs for operators by improving situational awareness and reducing the number of missed approaches in reduced visibility conditions. The ruling thereby allows Part 91 (corporate) including foreign private owners, Part 121 and Part 135 (air carriers), Part 125 (small air carrier aircraft) Part 129 foreign air carriers to use EFVS systems in their aircraft.
Kollsman and Gulfstream Aerospace have been in the forefront of EFVS technology development since 1997. The Kollsman All Weather Window® is currently certified on the Gulfstream G550™, G500™, GV™, GIV™, G400™, and G300™ business jets. Additionally, FedEx Express has selected Kollsman's All Weather Window® EVS for installation on their Boeing MD-11, MD-10, and Airbus A300 and A310 widebody aircraft fleet.
Kollsman's All Weather Window® EVS is still the only EFVS in the world certified to operate with a Head Up Display (HUD) and immediately benefit from this new rule change.
Kollsman's All Weather Window®, employs a special IR sensor which presents an image projected on any raster video capable Head-up Display and Head Down Display, providing the pilot with a forward-looking picture overlaying the outside view in a conformal manner. The system allows the pilot to detect light and ground features (such as runways, aircraft and buildings) at night and in low visibility conditions. The pilots and their passengers immediately benefit from lower landing minima, improved flight safety, and increased situational awareness.
Kollsman, Inc., headquartered in Merrimack, NH is a leading manufacturer of electro-optic systems and avionics supplying to U.S. and friendly foreign commercial and military markets.
